Does water polo make you inflexible?

How can i make a better water polo team?

  • Ok, i was on the JO team for water polo. Ive played for 6 years. I know what im doing when i play. Yet i have a team with only me and 1 other swimmer... so far my coach told me that me and him are our only offense... so i think im going to have to just rough out my hs experience and leave it alone because we cant win... any ideas tho? I was starting varsity last year.. now im forced to play on JV so i'll be better then them all. So far my plan might just be me out treading ppl, cuz i can get up to my waist and hold mid stomach. or for me to set... because my WHOLE team will have to stay on defense cuz they cant swim. so i might have like 3 ppl on me so it wont work. any other good ideas i can try? im already trying to get swimmers. Please help!

I play water polo too and i know it can be frustrating to have a team of people slower than you are. The best thing to do is probably to get them all swim training at least 2 times a week. Also, I don't know if your coach already does this but in training try jump-outs. Its where you sprint the length of the pool, then jump out onto the side of the pool. Then your coach blows his/her whitstle and you go again. The whistle gets faster and faster each time. You can start out doing 10 jump-outs then gradually increase the amounts. It's sort of like a beep test in water! Also, you could try a bit of cross-training. Get your team running and garanteed it will improve swimming! I hope this helps!

That's an interesting question. Can your team REALLY not swim? Or are they just slow? And this isn't really your problem...its more your coach's problem. Maybe he's not good, maybe you could help him, maybe you can't. A lot of coaches are stubborn. So here's some ideas. 1. Get your teammates to swim during off season to improve their swimming. 2. Get your team to do off season conditioning. You can work on throwing skills, team work as well as strength. (most kids go out for polo either cause they swam or didn't succeed on other teams. They don't really know about sports so they need more practice time to learn team concepts and how to throw and catch the ball. If you can't throw/catch the ball on land, you can't do it in the pool. 3. Get your teammates to join a summer/winter team. This depends on the coach too. 4. Recruit more swimmers to the team. 5. Ask your coach what you can do and offer to help. Get more parent involvement. Most coaches are young and don't know how to ask parents for help...but the parents really do want to help out. They just need to be asked. Good luck!
