Any tips for catching blue crabs?

How do I stop catching crabs? HELP!!! (rowing)?

  • I row in the 8+ (sweep, of course) and we have this race in 4 days. I keep catching crabs!! the rest of the crew is starting to get really worried!! please tell me how to stop catching crabs! Any tips for handling my nerves on race day would be very much appreciated. This is my first race. Anything i should take care of or anticipate. Thanks!

  • Answer:

For the crabs: feather early like above your knees, and when you go to the catch make sure your oar is not touching the water, and then plop it in at the square. For the nerves: reach the rigger at the top and straighten your back, close your eyes, and breathe the river air. (always helps me) to billybob, it says "rowing" so it would have to do with rowing

Tap your handle downwards at the finish before feathering. Your blade motion should be completely horizontal through the drive, then pretty much straight down at the finish, horizontal again through the recovery, and vertical at the catch. You may be trying to feather in the water and just moving your hands forward.

Try getting your blade out and THEN feathering. It's possible that you're feathering while you're still in the water. Also make sure that you're fully square at the catch. Other than that, check your rigger really well. If anything is loose, that could be causing your problems too. @ billybob: a crab is a rowing term meaning that your blade gets caught by the water and ripped out of your hands at the end of a stroke- NOT what you're thinking. :)
