What type of wetsuit should I buy?

What type of Wetsuit should I buy for surfing, windsurfing and snorkeling on holiday in Orkney, N. Scotland?

  • I have no experience of wetsuits, so am wondering what type, thickness and style to get for the chilly Orcadian waters!

  • Answer:

Air temperatures in Orkney right now are about 10-15 C. Water temperature is 10 C. That's slightly cooler (within about 2 C) than the Pacific where I am, and most people here wear a 4/3 full suit for surfing and windsurfing (4mm thick in the body, 3mm thick in the arms and legs), sometimes with a hood. So my guess is you could go with a 4/3 or slightly thicker 5/4 (diving is a whole different story). Search for watersport centres near Orkney and see what they recommend. If the temperatures at home for you are much different from Orkney, it might make sense to see if you can rent a wetsuit there instead of buying one.

Please consult with other surfers. Deal with a good shop. Don't neglect trying a 'dry suit'. Cold water is enervating. Moving cold water is even more enervating. Thick wet suits may keep you warm longer but are restrictive of movement. If conditions are pleasant a 'shorty' may suffice. Both surfing and wind surfing expose you to the air. Evaporation will cool you. Be careful....
