How to catch brook trout?

  • Hi there is this river that i know of somewhere upstate ny that i know has fish. There also many rappids, I have seen people fishing from the banks and people catch a lot of fish in the river rappids. Im not sure exactly what they do but they say they use salted minnows or worms. They say worms work better. Anyway I think they have their line with a small hook and just 3 to 5 of those pebble like weights on the line. I tried this but my line always keeps drifting of to the side where the bank is. I wanted to know if anyone could please help me to tell me what to use next time as bait, and how to catch the fish. Im not sure if the fish are in the rappids or at the end but the rappids are not that long and people fish everywhere in it but catch a lot of fish. I would say it gets 4 to 5 ft deep. WHAT IS THE BEST THING TO USE AS BAIT AND HOW SHOULD I CATCH THEM, i mean do i leave the bait on the bottom or what.

  • Answer:

Use garden worms for bait. Use the smaller split shot weights. You just want the bait to slowly bounce along the bottom. Not to fast or slow. Try at the bottom of the rapids in the slower water. Keep your finger on the line or watch your rod tip closely. They are not hard biters. Hope this helps. Enjoy.

Before you try fishing, watch the river. Try and see the fish. You have to watch without making shadows or movements. Brook trout take flies. They raise from secure positions to take a dry fly. Wet flies sometimes work. You have to find out what flies are present that they are eating. Bait is ok but not as much fun as flies. Brook Trout come in sizes up to four or five pounds. Most available today are less then 12 inches. Cast small pieces of worms on a small hook upstream of a suspected trout 'lie'. The bait has to run at the same speed as the current. If the bait won't sink add a sinker above the hook. Early morning and late evening are the best times to fish. The trout are wary and don't expose themselves. Run your bait into and under obstructions. You should also be losing hooks and bait to snags. Trout lie facing upstream waiting for their dinner to appear. Big trout take the best 'lies'. Learn where they are. Remember every spot that you saw, missed or took a trout. Tell no one.....
