Is there anything that would prevent me from entering international water territories on a kayak?

  • Answer:

Just the weather and possibly your endurance. International waters begin 12 miles off shore in most places. You'd probably be wise to have some identification with you on your return to your own waters if the Coast Guard comes across you and they know you've returned from outside of their territorial limits.

Tropical Storm System, maybe... Alien abduction, definitely. Seriously, nothing I can think of off hand. Take an EPIRB if you can afford it. Absolutely take a VHF and know how to use it. If you're going to be anywhere near shipping lanes, fix proper maritime lighting and a radar reflector to rear deck ~ stern. Spare paddle, couple extra days worth of water & snacks (think Power Bars - they're still possible to eat after soaking open in sea water for a couple days), proper clothing for long term swimming (roto-cool if you get too warm), and a few different types of signaling gear (mirror, flares, dye or floating streamer).

International waters are supposedly open to all. All may be large open water and probably not a safe place for a small boat. Large boats are impossible to turn quickly. Try applying common sense.

If you stand on a kayak, it is likely to tip . . . I would recomend sitting in a kayak . . . on second thoughts the sharks need feeding in those international water territories . . .
