How can I accurately weigh my head?

I'm a rower but i need to ask if i can be a coxswain, one problem in my head i weigh 140lbs.?

  • Last winter I hurt my shoulder, I had been out for eight months, and I just came back this year.. my shoulder is still giving me massive pain and I might not be able to row anymore, but I certainly DON"T want to quit my team! I'm on varsity and this is my second year rowing, we have novice right now who do not know anything about coxing to where as i know what to say and have a good idea of how to steer the boat, should I ask my coach if it comes to me not being able to row? what are your thoughts? i can drop the weight in decent amount of time and keep it off I've gained a lot of muscle weight, I'm small and to the eye i look like a much lower weight that in fact before i was weighed three coaches asked me to cox.

  • Answer:

I'm assuming you're pretty sure you can't row anymore (which is sad), or at least for this season. I would suggest maybe coxing during some practices (I know on my team, our coach wants our coxes to be decent rowers, so they usually row once a week-ish) and spend the other practices doing some super light erging (legs only, perhaps) or going on runs (which will thin you out). Your coach should want to keep you on the team, so hopefully he'll have some suggestions...I would talk to him about it as soon as possible. coxing novice might be good, but as i sad before, try only coxing a few times a week, and erging/working out the other days, because as long as you plan on getting back on the rowing train (or boat, i guess...punny...) you don't want to commit yourself to dealing with novices. good luck! have a lovely head racing season!

personally id take rowing over coxing any day, but if your shoulder is messed up then just try and wait a bit longer for it to heal and if it doesnt then just try coxing. 140lbs is pretty heavy cox so try and lose a little weight. if youre already toned then its not healthy to do that and just stick to rowing. if you have some unnecessary weight then by all means lose it and try coxing. if youre coxing novices then DONT. i had to teach novices to row and it took up too much time in the training season. anyways best of luck to you!
