  in relation to boards bro a soft top is probably cheaper than a mal but you advance quick from a soft top. a decent mal would do good and last you ages and also give you a good solid base for when you progress to a short board. get a board around 7'0-7'6 depending on your weight remember your looking for volume in a board rather than the height, a bigger volume makes it easyer to paddle into waves and gives you more balance when stood up.
