Where do I apply for a fishing job?

Where can i get a job lobster fishing in MA? How long are the trips? What to prepare for?

• How far off the coast do most boats go to catch lobster? I was hoping for maybe a list of different company's, boats, or captains that I could contact, and possibly work for. I've tried doing research online but to no prevail. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks

  Because lobsters are caught in traps, most lobster fishing is done inshore. You might travel about 25 to 50 miles to check your strings. It's normally done as a day trip for the boat. You leave early in the morning and return when the job is done which is normally before dark. If you've never worked a lobster boat before you might have a hard time finding a first job. What you probably want to do is to start hanging around docks and volunteer to do odd jobs and learn. I'm not sure you know what you're in for though. Lobstering is hard work. You have winches and the boat to help you haul up the traps, but there's still lots more back breaking work for the crew to do all day. What's probably the easiest job is steering the boat, that's why the captain normally does that. That and the fact that he knows where and how he's dropped the string of traps and knows where he wants the traps to be for the next catch. Good luck with your dream, but I know I wouldn't want it.
