How would you get an Erg score for rowing?

Rowing: is my 2k erg score good for my age and experience?

  • I am a sophomore in high school, going onto junior year... I began rowing this past fall as a novice, and my best 2k erg score has been 7:56. Everyone else on my crew is 8:15 or greater I am a female my height is 5' 7'' and my weight is 174 lbs. I want to possibly be recruited into college, and I was wondering how much time I would have to cut off from my 2K in order to be considered.

  • Answer:

That's a great 2k for your age and height. If you want to get a good scholarship, try to get it close to 7:30. With the score you have now you will probably get into the college's rowing team, but not a good scholarship. All together it depends on the College you are planning to attend. For the Ivy leagues, I don't even think it's possible to get an athletic scholarship but for smaller colleges, you could get a small scholarship where you are now. My advice is get it as low as you can. It doesn't matter what others on your team get, because you wont really get anywhere in rowing if you can't get it under 8:00. Even if you reach 7:30, keep working as hard as you can and good luck.

Your erg score is good. However annoying it might be, there is no set time for what your 2K should be. Considering that you're a novice I would keep working at it and gradually gain fitness and chip off time. One of the faster 2K times at my club is 7:08, so considering that you're a young novice, you have nothing to worry about. Just be thankful that genetically you're big enough to produce erg times like that. For the best 2K set a goal for what you want your split rate to be and follow this plan: 500: stay on goal split rate 500: -1 or -2 off of goal split 500: - (at least) 2 from your split (this should be your hardest, fastest, strongest 500 of the entire piece) 500: -1 from your goal split Remember to stay strong, breath and keep your head up, so you stay supported at the catch during the third five hundred. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.
