What rivers can you kayak on in england?

  • I've tried google but they give such vague answers :/ mostly to do with wholes clubs being allowed on to rivers, and apparently only 2% of rivers in UK and Wales have public access. I live in south east en gland and I really want to start kayaking but what's the point if you aren't allowed on any rivers? I don't really want to join a club where you have to follow a rep around ¬¬ I'd rather do it by myself, and I know people say this is a bad idea, but if you tell people where you are going and when you expect to be back it should be fine, and take all the other safety stuff in to account so are there any rivers that allow you to kayak, along them without trespassing or having to get a super expensive permit? I don't mind buying one but I do if they are stupidly expensive/ take years to get, also do you have to register your boat even if its just a kayak? The closest river to me is the River Lee so any info on that river would be amazing thanks

    What you need to get your hands on is the UK rivers guide book which is also online in source. As to the lee, I hope that's the one in clacton not Ireland, thats covered by the thames valley association, and its not a public but private watercourse unless its changed since 2000.

It's great to be independent but in the case of kayaking it is not safe. The basic rule tells that you need a party of three boats. Accidents do happen. As regards access, contact the British Canoe Union. Access problems arise because of the behavior of trespassers trying to get to the river. In order to start kayaking you need to take lessons or you will never master the sport. Joining a club is one of the best ways to get into the sport.

Have a look at the Uk river guide it is web page that has a lot of river in section so you can find you location, or to find river of a grade that suits you. If you can not find it on the web then look up halifax canoe club .dot org it has link to it.
