What length of rope do i need to climb the matterhorn?

Proper rope length for wake boarding behind a larger boat?

  • I just recently started wake boarding. I have no trouble getting up and boarding but the length of rope we are using is MUCH longer than the suggestions in other answers here on Yahoo. The boat we are using is a 28" Sea Ray with a gross weight of approximately 5,500 pounds. This is much larger than your average wake boat which normally weighs in around 3,500 pounds. I won't say the exact length we are using to avoid biasing any answers but it is longer than the 50-75 feet of rope normally suggested. Any thoughts?? Does anyone know the online location of perhaps a table that suggess rope length as a function of boat weight and perhaps rider experience? Any help would be great!!

  • Answer:

The logic is that with a larger and heavier boat you'll make a larger wake. Therefore you can tow your wake boarders farther back from the boat. Most of the pre-made lines I've seen are about 60 ft in length, but they're designed for much smaller boats. The only problem you might have with a longer rope would be if it was so long that other boats and craft in the area can't obviously see that the tow boat and surfer are together, and attempt to cut between them. If the wake at the end of the tow rope is large enough to ride you should be fine.
