How to fix my wetsuit?

Help! How do I wear in a Wetsuit!!?

  • hey my boss recently gave me a wetsuit, its about 7mm so its a thick one. It fits me nicely length wise and even in the arms but its really stiff and hasnt got a lot of give in it when it comes to... oh I don't know... moving! even if its just basin movements in the arm like bending. its pulling on my arms so much so that when I'm driving to work it actually made my shoulders ache! Its brand new as well but I've looked on the internet and it says its normal for it to be like this so how do I wear in this wetsuit? the last wetsuit I owned was bigger than I am so I never had this problem so HELP!!

  • Answer:

If it's a 7mm wetsuit and it's 7mm all over then its unlikely you will ever wear it in, 7mm is pretty thick for a wetsuit, i used to have one for cold water SCUBA diving but couldn't use it for windsurfing or kitesurfing as it was too restrictive. Now you know why your boss gave it to you ;o)

No 7 mm wetsuit will ever have much give, simply because it is so thick. A suit that thick is almost certainly designed with scuba in mind. Dive suits have to be thicker than surface suits because of the compression of the neoprene at depth. A diver wearing a 7mm suit at 100 ft (where pressure is quadrupled) will actually be less insulated than a surfer in a 2 mm suit at the surface. Also, while diving, a wetsuit will be somewhat lubricated by the water within it, making it feel less restrictive -- and scuba divers don't usually need to make big or rapid movements anyway. So if you wanted that suit for surfing or kayaking, sorry. Put it on eBay, and get a thinner one.
