How to attach the mast to the windsurfer board?

Is a formula-class windsurfer a good choice?

  • I'm 42. When I was 16, I used to windsurf avidly. Back in the days when the mast step fit into a slot in the board. . . and with each passing week you had to wrap another layer of duct-tape to the mast stem so that it would fit. Anyway, I haven't windsurfed, since. I still love sailing and race a catamaran, but I think I'm ready to get back into windsurfing. I live near Annapolis. The wind isn't all that great, despite that this is called the "sailing capital of the world". This is why I have shy'd away from wind-surfing. However, I recently caught a glimpse of the Formula class windsurfer and am very intrigued. It looks like it would be a good choice for a 210 pounder that sails in moderate wind. I don't know much about them, but they look like they suit my needs perfectly. Are there other board designs that plane as quickly and work as well in light to moderate wind?

  • Answer:

I've been sailing formula for the past 10 years in Brazil on a region of predominantly light winds 10-15 knots. I'd say that formula is the best alternative for such conditions not only because it guarantees fun within this range of wind ( I have friends tha are comfortable sailing up to 20-22 knots on a formula) but also it can take you anywhere you want due to the upwind and downwind angles that you only get on a formula. The most recommended sail sizes range between 9 and 12 square meters, I use a 10 and an 11 and they pretty much cover most of the conditions I face Hope this helps

I'm 60 and remember those days. I'm about 75kg (165lb) have boards from 70l to 120l plus teaching boards and sails from 3.5 to 7.5m2. I would personally have reservations about a Formula board and rig because they are basically a light wind racing class, and unless you really get into it it may be a bit demanding. The equipment has changed hugely since you last windsurfed so I recommend hiring or borrowing some gear to try out, you may find that a smaller free ride board and lighter sails might suit you better.
