Why does a canoe float?

Should i get an inflatable Canoe, inflatable Kayak, inflateable boat,a Float tube or inflatable Pontoon to fish?

  • I am about 90 lbs and 4 foot 11 inches. I Own Waders with boots and have been fishing for a while. I have about 200$ to spend and need a new way to fish. So should I get an inflatable boat, inflatable Canoe, inflatable kayak, inflatable float tube, or an inflatable pontoon to go fishing with

  • Answer:

You really don't provide enough information on where you fish and what kind of fishing you intend to do. Since you use waders I assume you are mostly either fly-fishing or spin casting in streams. If you are sticking to that, a pontoon float might extend your range in that environment. But if you plan on moving into lake or larger river fishing, a canoe or rowboat (as g-steed said) would give you more options. The problem with your $200 budget is that any inflatable canoe or kayak you get is not going to be much more than a sluggish pool toy with little storage space -- they are also prone to getting blown around in wind and waves and don't make good fishing platforms. Quality inflatable canoes and kayaks cost closer to $1000 and up. The best bang for your buck would be to look for a used hard shell canoe or bass boat. If you have to have an inflatable for transport or storage reasons, stick to the solo fishing float or pontoon units, if you can find one in your price range.

Fishing is an active sport. You are always moving about. A standard rowboat is the best platform I know of to fish from. Next best is a canoe. I vote against any inflatable because they are not rigid. I used canoes to get to a 'sweet spot' on the Wolf River, exited the canoe, and then waded about fly fishing. I have used canoes in small lakes. You can set your canoe with either an anchor or a pole set in the lake bottom. Inquire at marine dealers about used canoes.

It's true that a quality inflatable kayak or canoe would still cost a lot more than the budget you have in mind. But if you have a good paddleboard at home, you can efficiently use this to fish with Carbonerro Training Rails. We bought it this summer for our son, since his sudden interest in stand up paddle boarding. He learned the sport really fast with this SUP gear. Now my husband uses it for his fishing escapades. Very convenient. Easy to assemble and install.

You might consider a sit on top kayak - they are becoming real popular for fishing. It's fun to paddle around, fairly stable & easy to fish from. You can get various sizes - the longer the faster, but also more expensive & heavier usually. Some places will allow you to demo them first. http://www.whitecapkayak.com
