What is the best campground in Michigan next to water?

Places to kayak in Michigan?

  • I am looking for some good places to do calm water (no big rapids) kayaking in Michigan. Preferably near a campground. Does anyone know of any good spots?

  • Answer:

Southwest Michigan has some nice places along the St. Joseph, Rocky and Portage Rivers (& many more rivers and streams). http://www.rivercountry.com/canoeing.asp http://www.threeriverscanoerental.com/ (note above links reference canoeing but they also do kayaking) There's tons of places to camp along the route and close by to the rivers. I grew up in this area and it's beautiful. My cousin used to kayak from his house to school every day. Really. (way cooler than driving Mom's mini-van). For list of camping sites: http://www.rivercountry.com/campgrounds.asp Have fun!

You are never more than six miles from a large body of water in Michigan. We actually have more lakes than Minnesota, and more shoreline than any state, except Alaska. Finding a good place to engage in a water related sport in Michigan, is about as difficult as finding someone with a gun in Texas.
