Is there a way to install an anti-virus program on a PC without an internet connection?
-
I have a virus problem with my memory stick. First, let me tell you that I have two computers, one with internet, and one without. Every time I insert my memory stick into my PC (the one with internet) then Avast! blocks a virus. So I get the virus removed, and then everything seems fine. This problem has been going on for a while now, I have a strong suspicion that this virus is coming from my PC without internet. I transfer data from the PC without internet to the PC with internet (and Avast!) and I think every time I plug in my memory stick to the PC without internet it gets a virus. Now here comes the problem: I can't remove the virus on the PC without internet because I deleted it's anti-virus (it used to have internet about a year ago) and I can't install an anti-virus because it doesn't have internet. So, my question to you is, is there a way to install anti-virus on a PC without internet? Your help will be very much appreciated.

Answer:
You can actually install antivirus software without an internet connection either using a CD with the software or by downloading the set up installer [using another PC that does connect to the internet] and transfering it to the PC with a web connection via a flash drive or similar. The trouble is, that an antivirus program is only as good as its last update and without regular updates [visa the internet] the antivirus will get out of date signature files and not be effective at blocking malware. More antivirus software updates daily or at least every 48hrs and without the internet updates it will become next to useless very quickly. There is one way to get what you want. You could download and use the free portable version of Clamwin Antivirus from here: http://www.clamwin.com/content/view/118/89/ It runs from a USB flash drive and doesn't need to be installed on a PC. However it still needs to be regularly updated with new signatures from the internet. So as long as you connect the flash drive to the system you have that does have an internet connection, for regular signature updates, you can then plug the drive into the other PC [without an internet connection] to scan for malware. This is a rather long way round though and most people would rather network the two computers together and then they can both share the internet connection and the antivirus software. Your choice as to which method you choose

Nope, installers still download a lot of information.

Download the installation file of an anti-virus from your PC which has the internet connection. Then copy the installation file on the memory stick and then from there, copy it to your other computer (without the internet connection). Once that file is on that computer, you can easily install it without an internet connection there :)

Download the Avast setup program to your PC with internet and save it onto your clean memory stick, Insert the memory stick into your other PC and run the setup program from there.

Use a clean USB stick and download the anti-virus setup file from your internet PC. Then use that stick to install an anti-virus to your non-internet PC.

You can run Malwarebytes or another cleaner through a USB. There are loads of tutorials to do it. And I think Malwarebytes comes with a CD to run
I would suggest you get a new memory stick. And no, you would have to get the program some way else, like on a disc or a non-infected memory stick.

The name of the virus would help. A PC without internet is very unlikely to get a virus. I would say your USB stick has a form of autorun inf worm, if I'm right Avast cannot remove it, also formatting the USB won't remove it. http://experi3nc3.wordpress.com/2007/05/10/flash-disinfector-by-subs/
