Yes formatting ur hard drives removes everything permanently. For antivirus software i will recommend McAfee. IT will surely remove all the crap from ur pc. And u should also use a good software like maybe RegInOut to scan and sort out ur registry. The state of the registry really affects the computer's speed so u must get it sorted at once. Also defrag ur registry through RegInOut.

If already virus attacked to your computer you can use virus removal tools. there so many tools you can get from the internet. I experienced same problem and i use AVG virus removal tool and Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. that was the best option i can give.

First of all - DO NOT FORMAT the Hard Drive, UNLESS you want to permanently delete ALL DATA. By that I mean everything: Windows, other programs, all docs and spreadsheets - everything. Delete Internet Data by using CCleaner's cleaning feature. Most Browsers have a built-in feature to do the same but CCleaner is easier and more thorough as it will also delete user history in other software. Advanced SystemCare is another program that comes in a free version that does the same and more. Interestingly I use both and they each offer different things. For a free anti-virus try MSE. This always help. Or you could go extreme and find your recovery disk (as it will also have your OS on it) and redo the entire computer. Reformatting your drive shouldn't erase your internet history, but if your that concerned then write down all the sites you like visiting. Just a heads up, people at a well known computer store (such as PC world or currys) will not look at your credit info or anything else of personal data as it violates the data protection act, which they must follow.

Every couple of months I go to Trend Micro and run their free online scanner, Housecall. You don't have to sign up or pay anything. Also running malwarebytes, another free scanner, to get rid of any malware on you computer. Formatting does not get rid of data completely. There is always traces.

Just personal opinion of course. I use Avast , I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.
