  • Answer:

It sounds like your friend's MySpace account has been infected. Active X is a scripting language, a programming language. It is used by Internet Explorer web browser to run applications within IE. Normally software programs need to be installed on your computer for you to use them. However, ActiveX allows IE to run software programs directly within itself and does not require you to install them. For example, you can view PDF files on your browser without Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. However, ActiveX is also vulnerable to abuse and is used by hackers to infect computers. As a security measures, you can turn off ActiveX. In your case, your IE web browser was trying to protect your computer by not allowing ActiveX to be run on MySpace. But, once you allowed IE to run ActiveX, you basically allowed the hacker to run his scripts on IE. It is most likely you are the victim of adware. You should install an antispyware program on your computer and scan for any adware or spyware. You can download the free Spbot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft's Ad Aware Personal Edition, the 2 most popular free spyware scanners. The download link is http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/ You should also increase the security level of IE to not allow ActiveX to run but it also means you won't be able to see the special effects of webpages. Start IE, from the menu bar, go to Tools > Internet Options > Security > make sure the Internet icon is highlighted > under "Security level for this zone" raise the bar to either "medium high" or "high" > [Apply] > [O.K.] > Restart.

Either your friend or someone else has installed an infected ActiveX on your friends MySpace. When the Yellow bar drops you have to choice to accept the Active X or not. If you do not trust the site or expect an Active X then do not accept it. I find most honest and trustworthy sites will inform you that accepting an Active X is required. When there is no notice and the Active X bar drops from the Toolbar, as a suprise, I do not accept it.
