PGP Thunderbird question, why won't it let me encrypt message?
-
I just set up my open PGP/Kleopatpa/Thunderbird accounts, and there is an option in the tab that says "Encrypt This Message". When I click on it I am directed to a field to enter a digital signing certificate and encryption certificate. When I go to import mine that I have already created in Kleopatra, it tells me that no certificates can be found, and that it can't find any files in PKCS12 format. I cannot save files in this format in my GPG program, only in asc, gpg, etc. I can manually encrypt a message in Kleopatra, but I want to be able to use my email client as it was supposed to- any ideas? I have tried exporting to the keyserver and seeing if it would come back in PKCS12 format, all it does is display the public key. I'm pretty sure that if I would have set up my certificate in X.509 I would be able to export, mine is Open PGP. If you need additional info please answer or email. Thanks. Oh by the way sending and receiving encrypted messages works fine, I just want to be able to encrypt the text before sending as this feature should allow.

Answer:
Thunderbird uses S/MIME signatures same as websites, not PGP. There is an add-on, though, to use PGP. Not sure what Kleopatpa is. You can generate a personal certificate private/public pair in OpenSSL, and import it to Thunderbird. Then you sign a message with your private key and send it to someone. Then they have your public key automatically saved to their store, so they can now send you an encrypted message which you can read with your private key. If they send you a signed message, you have their public key, and you can then send them encrypted mail. In theory, you should check the certificate bibblebabble via another channel (over the phone, or face-to-face) in case the mail was sent by an imposter.
