How can one block porno sites on a computer? I work in a library where the public has access to many computers
-
We have a form patrons sign that says they will not access these sites, however, it doesn't stop everyone. Therefore children roaming free could be subjected to this material. Is there a way to deal with this. Has any person, school, or organization solved this problem?

Answer:
One product that I recommend using is Sentry Parental Controls. It allows you to block and monitor any site within a specific category. It also allows you to monitor and control whatever computers have the program installed on them. You can run the program in Stealth Mode, allowing it to run without any signs of it running while the users surf the Internet. You can also block and allow sites or keywords, depending on how you set it. All of the settings are controlled through the the Internet so you don't even need to be on those computers to manage them. You can control them from any computer connected to the Internet. You can use the free method, proxying the connections thru one PC and blocking on that one with parental control software available free on download.com, but the connection will be EXTREMELY SLOW. You can also do what the schools do. Use a blocking system that cuts it off at the internet level. By that i mean a pay for service that you route all the computers through, (they will guide you) and they will do the rest!

The most ideal solution is to get a web filter. You have two choices: Software or hardware. Software filters are installed on every machine, will need to purchase a license for either each computer, or a company\site license, depending who you go for. Hardware can be a filter that connects into your network and blocks all requests to either sites and\or categories you dont want people view, easier to manage though probably a little more expensive. 3rd party software is your best bet and really only options for public computers. Spector Pro has home versions and business versions and is a #1 rated product. Also, http://www.theparentsedge.com may help you some. A top products for businesses seems to be websense. It's what the Gov. uses.

I don't think you can legally block those sites. I know in Georgia it is unconstitutional! so you may wanna check with your legal department
