How do I password protect my Internet?

How can I password-protect my wireless internet connection?

  • Today there was a front-page article on the Yahoo home page called "Is Your Neighbor Scamming on Your Wi-Fi?" and I have no clue how to password-protect mine! I own a newer Linksys cable router. I use it for my home's primary computer (where it is directly connected via ethernet cable) But I also use it for two other computers that are located in my bedroom and my family room (and those computers are wirelessly connected). Can someone please tell me how I can password-protect my wireless connection and how it is that I exactly go about doing so? Thank you!

  • Answer:

when you create a wireless internet connection, your asked if you want to enable a sercure wireless connection, then you can either make up your own, or have it make one for you. either way, click on your wireless connection icon and check for wireless connections in the area. when yours appears, it will tell you if it is a secure connection or not.

Skim the manual for enabling wep encryption. That's all you can do. Unfortunately I can crack a WEP key in 3 hours :P. Wireless technology security is not up to par. You reall should enable WEP without it anybody can hop on ur network. With it, only the 133t can.

Kewl! You chose the best for home use! Using Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router or WRT54GS Wireless-G Router for Secure Setup Basic Diagram: +--------+ |High | |Speed | |Modem| +--------+ | +----------+ |Linksys | +------+ |WRT54G|->|PC-A| |Router | +------+ +----------+ | +------+ |PC-B | +------+ Setup Procedures: Before you start you will need some important information!!! If you don't see anything like this you will need to get from your ISP. After you have all this information and have all your hardware connected similar to the basic diagram above you will need to configure your Router. Open broswer like Internet Explorer, Firefox or some such. In the Address box type: http://192.168.1.1 If you get prompted for a Username and Password type these, ADMIN/ADMIN We will change these later. You should be take to the Setup window for the router. Use all of the recommended settings below. They will help you configure your router for safe wireless use and wired use in your home. Whereever you see something in angle brackets <...> you must supply. When you create a new password use both upper/lower case letters and numbers. Write it down, memorize it, eat the paper you wrote it on and never share with anyone. Just kidding but you should not take this lightly. Anyone who know this information could make it so they could hijack your Internet connection. This could have sever legal consequences or imbaracing at the least. check your security program and click the part where it ask if you want to log in every time your computer turns on

Enter your router's security settings and input either a WEP or WPA key. This will require a password for devices to connect to your wi-fi network.

you should google "linksys login" and find out first how to log into your router(you do this in a webpage) then from there you should see something about security. theyre might be things about changing your default router password, WEP codes, maybe even something about MAC filtering. since ur asking this question here i dont think you should bother with MAC filtering, unless you know a trusted computer guru who can do it for u. as for the router login, most of the time its set to a default of ADMIN/PASSWORD as your login and password respectively. if u google the linksis thing i mentioned earlier that site should tell u the default login. or it could be physcially writen on the router, so u mite look on that first. when u find it, make sure to change it because most people can guess the basic password, or even easier just go look it up on google like u did. the web code mite be a little harder to set up. set up should be somewher in a security section in the router login. once u actually do set it up, write it down because youre gonna need it to get internt to your other computers. im sry i couldnt give u better instructions, but i only noe about netgear routers, so hopefully they should be similar enough that you can figure it out. best of luck~!

I found a system of Password protection,it is called "Roboform" and so simply type roboform.com into your search pane, the site will appear with an easy to follow download, which is free for home users. Once downloaded the set-up process is quick and easy.

WHat you do is set up what is called "encryption" on your router. Call Linksys-# 1-800-326-7114 Ask them to help you put 64-bit encryption on your router. They will take you right through the set up. That will prevent anyone else from being able to free-load off your wireless router. ;) All the best!

you first have to log into your router. open an internet explorer window. in the addres bar type this and ONLY this. 192.168.1.1 You will get a window that requests you to login. If you havn't changed your user name and PW it should be as follows User name is blank Password: password Then go to wireless settings. You want to set up WEP and you want to set up mac address filtering. That will prevent any free use of your system. Also make sure you change the SSID (Secure system ID, esentually is the name of the router) because if they see the name is "Linksys" they will KNOW how to log in.
