What are some common computer programs?

What are good computer/internet security programs?

• I just recently inherited my nana's toshiba laptop after she passed away in early November of 2011. Up until recently it was running fine; and even after i deleted "Norton Internet security" it was fine. Well all of the sudden I started getting "Error: Delay write..." or something like that. so i installed AVG. But what notice RIGHT before it was finished installing was that my desktop was gone {like all of my icons and stuff, the only thing there was my recycling bin} so I was just going to go the "All Programs" just put the stuff back on my desktop. But it was saying i only had AVG on my CPU so i called my friend and explained that I've ALWAYS prefered AVG but i wanted more than just one security program, and he understood and reccomended Avira...but i still DO NOT know what is wrong with my computer or what security programs to install? Any Ideas/Reccomendations as to what is going on and what programs i should install and what i should do? I'll give you points!!! Thank you for all your help, Nomecisangel
