Is There A Way To Password A Portable Hard Drive?

I have a Microsoft Word document on my flash drive. Is there a way to password protect it?

  • Basically, I guess, I'm looking for a way to prevent others from getting into this file. It's not saved directly to any particular computer, and I don't know how to password-protect a file on a flash drive. Is there a way? Thanks.

  • Answer:

What I do on my computer is: First of all open the document Then .... 1 Click on tools (on the top menu) 2. Then options 3.Click the security tab 4 Type the password on the Pass to open box Thats how i do it to password protect a MS Word file When you open it Word will ask for a password. (There shouldn't be any difference when doing it on a Flash Drive)

You can put it in a passworded ZIP file. Download 7zip, install it, right click on the word file, go to 7zip, select add to archive, name it, select the ZIP file format, then in the bottom right you can enter a password.

You can use an encryption program, like AxCrypt to encrypt it. You would have to unencrypt it, and then reencrypt it when you are done. There are also a number of Java programs out there that do AES encryption: http://www.sourceforge.net/ Does it need to be a Word file? If there are no fonts, graphics, etc. - just text, it could be a text file (use Notepad to edit it). You could keep it encrypted with JavaScrypt http://www.fourmilab.ch/javascrypt/
