    Well, I can't say based on my personal experience, because I myself have only used free AV programs, but the site I use, and trust as a good unbiased comparative site is: http://www.av-comparatives.org/ Click on the summary report on the right pane for the AV of the year, as awarded by this site. Kaspersky is the best, and has won the AV of the year more than any other AV.

I use Norton Internet Security 2012 with a purchased version of Malware Bytes in protection mode. I have used Norton prodicts for 12 years and it hasn't failed me yet,. plus what is written in PC magazines. My second choice would be one you haven't mentioned Eset or Nod 32. But it is a matter of personal choice and cost. Freeware MSE is the only one with a firewall, haven't tried the new version but the old version was slow in scanning my only complaint. But most freeware won't have a frewall and only offer moderate protection. Freeware I use on my customers is Avast free, with Zone Alarm free firewall, not a bad combo. AVG used to used the word "heal" which I didn't understand as an Australian, unless your talking to a dog, no about computer infections?

I really don't think you need to spend money... I used to like Avast. Nothing ever got past it and it didn't cause any problems or slow down my machine. I used AVG before that and things did start slipping through. Removing the malware using AVG would sometimes mess up my computer. I don't think AVG is as good as it used to be. Now, I'm using my computer for a work at home job. Their software was incompatible with Avast and they made me switch to Microsoft Security Essentials. It hasn't let anything through yet and it doesn't slow down my computer at all. I never even thought of trying it before. But, after some research, I think it's even a bit better than Avast and comes close enough to the very best for free.

However, no antivirus is good in detecting spyware although they all claim to be. For spyware detection, you need to add a dedicated antispyware like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It has a free version but it only works on your demand. If you want real-time scanning and protection against malicious sites, get the pro version.
