  In addition to having an anti virus, you have to practice safe surfing. This means no limewire, or clicking on email attachments, etc. Anti virus companies like norton can only publish the signatures of virus that they know, and have calculated a defense against these viruses. New viruses in the wild (known as zero day attacks or exploits) will get right by them. Also, the virus writers know that the majority of people use norton, so they specifically target ways around norton. This is why you dont hear a lot about apple viruses. Its not worth their time to write viruses for macs. Theres just not a lot of them out there for it to be worth anything to them. They want to have their 15 minutes of fame. So, zero day viruses - there's no way to protect yourself other than safe computing. You might also want to do what I did and dump norton in favor of a lesser known anti virus program so you stay under the radar. I prefer Avast. It not only updates daily, but has a feature that protects your computer if something is happening that looks like virus activity...not just scanning the files against their virus signatures. Its free for home use (less the script protection) and I highly recommend it. Its a small program with only a few background tasks running. Norton is a CPU hog. Now, removing all traces of Norton it not too easy. There are 3 or 4 items in the add/remove group. Search the norton site for full removal instructions prior to actually doing it. Another really good free antivirus is AVG. You can find it easily. You can only have one AV running at a time. Lastly, some spyware and trojans that are not truly virus, CAN install viruses. Make sure you also run anti spy and anti adware. Unlike AV and firewall, you can have multiple antispy and anti ad programs running. Hope this helps.
