  • Answer:

It's never a good idea to disable your firewall, you will be risking getting trojans and worms. If you are using nortens or McAfee you can disable them by right clicking on their icon in your task bar...if you are using windows security click on start- click on all programs- then click on accessories-then highlight system tools the next box you will see windows security..u can disable it there...but beware you will put your computer at a great risk by doing so.

You should never go on the net without a firewall as you leave yourself open to attack. The problem could be XP's own firewall. To disable it follow the instructions below. If you do I would suggest you get a firewall like Zonealarm which is free to download. To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall Open Network Connections Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following: To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box. To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box. Notes To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure. If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions.

Your Windows firewall is on and you should leave it one! Never have your pc connected to the net without a firewall. Try Zone Alarm firewall, when you install it it will disable the Windows firewall for you. And then you have to teach it to allow you to use Messenger but its not difficult. Also try Avast! anti virus, as it will scan all your incoming messages and check them for viruses. You need to install one firewall. Everyone is giving accurate info on disabling firewalls, which I agree is a bad idea but there is no need to disable anything - what you have to do is put MSN into your 'trusted zone'. When the next message comes up it will probably say 'blocking 192.165.1.1 not those numbers, but should look like that. Copy numbers down and then open your firewall. Go to 'trusted sites' or 'enable sites' will be called something like that - add the numbers and then when MSN next tries to connect, the site should be recognised by your firewall as an ok site and let you connect. You may have to reboot for the changes to take place - can't remember that bit. Can't be any more specific than that because all firewalls look a bit different in their setup.
