Is there any way to hide/obscure one's IP address *while* one is online in public forums? My friend says this?

is impossible - I don't agree. Which of us is right, just out of interest? Thanks :)

Answer:
You can do so by using a Proxy service. However, those services can be and often are very dubious in nature and you leave yourself open to problems. You always show an IP. The Proxy shows one from its server instead of your own. So whilst it CAN be done it is often unwise to rely on it. Better you have an expendable account with an ISP. An account you can throw away if compromised.
