Where do I look for Windows Firewall?

Removing Viruses/Spyware from PC + Suspect Windows BACKUP folder?

  • Friend of mine been having trouble with his DELL PC - especially with BSOD & a large wallpaper stating 'PC is infected' - so he brought it to work so that I can have a look. Found out he's been online with NO firewall (XP Firewall is 'disabled' & cannot be started - Virus perhaps) OR antivirus installed (Silly B**gger) & so completely contaminated with spyware/Viruses etc (to date found over 40 - especially a BSOD/System bootup 'screensaver' one that REALLY annoying) Been running Spybot / Adaware / Clamwinportable (several times) from USB flash drive - in 'Normal mode', I'm unable to run in 'Safe Mode' due to what I suspect is another Virus ('Auto System Shutdown in 60 sec' due to DCOM problem) - to clean it up & so far managed to get rid of most (I think) For some reason unable to install free AVG [faults out on installation] OR Avast [Locks up PC on reboot] antivirus programs - once again suspect either Virus or possibly conflicting registry entries But I have noticed that about 50% have been found in 'C:\Windows\Backup\' folder On my PC (WinXP Pro) I don't have this folder - yet he does (XP Home) I'm unable to rename/move/delete it since it claims to be a 'system folder' - So my questions are - Is this a 'normal' windows folder or one made by a virus to hide itself in ?? - If it's a 'Virus made' one - how do I rename/Move it out of harms way ?? Thanks in advance

  • Answer:

I'm unable to run in 'Safe Mode' due to what I suspect is another Virus ('Auto System Shutdown in 60 sec') I only know one virus that does this - sasser/Blaster virus. a large wallpaper stating 'PC is infected' - this is a rogue program or smitfraud run free malwarebytes. So you cannot put an AV on it then try a free online scan: http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html I would turn off system restore before doing the scan god knows what's hiding in there. An Idea put clamwin on a usb stick update it then put it in the bad PC & run it: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable

The easiest way is to back-up all the work & important stuff, then wipe the hard drive and reformat/partition it. Then do a clean installation from the MS-Windows disc. It might sound a bit drastic but it's the only way of getting rid of all the nasty stuff that is now sure to be on his PC. Good luck!
