How do you know if you have a keylogger?

This may be a weird question but how do you know if someone has installed a keylogger on your PC?

  • not just someone in your home for instance know one uses my computer but my 9 year old nephew who plays games on Nickelodeon lol but NO family or friends uses my PC..so How do I know if a hacker or some other crazy person is recording my keystrokes

    There's no way to know for sure, since there are literally hundreds of keyloggers out there that all work in many different ways. Really good crackers also write their own software rather than purchasing a pre-made one and that can make detection very difficult. As the previous poster said, keeping an updated antivirus software may help catch some of the more popular ones, but it may not catch the more obscure or custom software. If you're really in doubt whether you're being monitored, the best option for you is to have your computer fomatted and everything re-installed by a technician.

Just update your anti-virus s/w or anti-spyware s/w regularly. If you have a keylogger installed then it may be caught by these. Also you could install some firewall like zonealarm that will ask your permission for any software that connects to the net. That way when the keylogger if installed connects to the net you will come to know.

You may try to browse the windows task manager. Go to Applications or processes. If you found something you think its a key logger, you may select it and press the end process. Btw, updating your antivirus will help a lot.

Don't blame your 9 year old. If he accidentally installed one, YOU didn't protect your PC properly!!! You'll know when you have your identity stolen, find unauthorized credit card purchases, bank account anomalies, etc. Most key loggers are "RootKits". Google for: Rootkit Revealer It will test for all hidden "Nasties". If found, re-install Windoze.
