What online computer course will better benefit me?

What do I need to know before I enroll into a course at university for Computer Security and Ethical Hacking?

  • This is a question to those who know the answer or those who have an idea! (I'm including an anecdote for effect!); I'm looking to study "Computer Security and Ethical hacking" course at university - I am currently studying AS levels (including AS IT - will further to A2 among various irrelevant subjects - NO problem entering the uni(s) to do the course btw), I am fairly confident I can get the grades and have the maturity level to do this course, yet I have no idea whether or not you need to learn anything before entering this course! I have of course looked into the course and modules at the universities I am planning to apply too, and am definitely sure this is for me (so don't ask if I'm ready! Please!) but I can find no areas to submit such a question and thus have come here - in all (if you didn't catch it) what do you need to know before studying such a subject at university level? (Preferably someone with experience yet I will read all comments!) THANK-YOU ^-^

  • Answer:

It seems Mike hasn't answered your question properly :P Different courses at different universities will assume/require different levels of pre-knowledge and the best way to find out is to contact them directly or have a look around their course websites. I'm sure it would have mentioned any things you need to know in the entry requirements section of the website and on UCAS. Email one of the admissions people from the universities for more specific advice :)

The course title is very miss leading. You will definitely learn how to make things more secure but on the ethical hacking side you will learn far more if you just read allot of books. I know a few people personally and they were very disappointed by it > a lecturer that teaches it me that you inadvertently learn more about hacking (due to the amount of packet sniffing you need to do) when you study networking. I would rather do computer networking any day over ethical hacking to learn about hacking.
