I need to find out how to create a file in windows 2000 server and then not be able to modify it or delete it.

I need to set a specific folder to perform this task. I have tried using permissions. I have set the security options to have write capabilities and unchecked modify but I can still modify a file that I saved. I have went in to advanced security tabe and checked the following. traverse, list folder, read attributes, read extended attributes, create file and read permissions. I have left the rest of these unchecked. When I do this a wierd thing happens. I can create a document in Word and try to save it to the folder I just set up and it will deny me access to saving it but will still put the file name I tried to save it as in the folder but with 0KB in the file. Not quite what I wanted. So all I have been able to do is either create a file and be able to modify it or not be able to create a file at all in that directory. Remember, I am trying to create a file in this folder and not be able to modify it once created.

Answer:
If you have Write access to a file you will be able to make changes to it. You just won't be able to delete the whole file. If you don't want the file to be changed. After you create the file change the permissions to Read/Execute. Another option is to mark the file as "Read Only" after you create it (General tab of the File Properties dialog box). Also keep in mind if you "move" a file that is on the same volume, it will retain the permissions of the original folder regardless of the permissions set on the new parent folder (unless you change the permission after the move).

when you set the permissions to "write", then you are allowing changes to be made. If you want to be the only one to be able to change the document, give yourself full control and everyone "Read".
