Paypal account hacked, should I be alright now?
-
Okay, to try and make a long story short (just skip to last paragraph if you don't want to read the wall of text)... An auction ended on ebay, someone won it and wanted to pay via credit card. Since I said I accepted credit cards and paypal in the listing, I accepted and he asked for my email address to make the transaction. About an hour later, I got an email from '[email protected]'. I already know it looked suspicious from the email address, but the email itself looked pretty genuine. It told me that the guy had paid 40.00 GBP into my paypal account and there was a link to login into your account. Being the idiot that I was, I went to the link and logged in (even though it was apparently a secure link with the green lock in the Google Chrome URL bar). It wouldn't let me log in and asked me to make sure my email and password were safe. Tried again after going to the paypal site via ebay, same problem. I then tried to change my password, at first it wouldn't let me because it said my gmail.com email address could not be found on their servers. I decided to change the end address to googlemail.com and that thankfully worked. So I managed to change my paypal password and I decided to change my ebay password too just in case. Everything seems fine now and I have informed paypal, but I'm still just a bit worried since I have my bank account details on paypal and of course I don't want anyone getting their hands on those. In case anyone was wondering, according to paypal, I never did receive that 40.00 GBP so I am almost certain the email was fake. I think I managed to change the password in time for the guy/gal to actually hack my account, but still. I've done a computer scan and it didn't come up with any trojans/keyloggers. All I want to know is, should my paypal (and ebay) accounts be safe now as long as I don't login via that email link again? I'm sorry that this is a bit of a stupid question and I know I'm paranoid, but I've never been hacked in anything before and obviously my bank details are very important.

Answer:
You did the right thing changing your password. The important thing here is that you realize you did not get "hacked" you were fooled into giving out your ID and password. Any email that wants any password is bogus. In the future only login to sites at that site or through a trusted site like Ebay. Monitor it closely (the paypal) and they will compensate any illegal transactions as long as you notice them within a few days. If that does happen to your bank account or pay pal then close the account and start a different one. Don't worry you're not paranoid it is your money.

Your first clue that something was wrong was when they asked for your PayPal email address. Buyers don't need that. They go through the link provided by eBay when they make a purchase.
Yes. Make sure passwords are 10, or more characters. Also make sure there are no alternate emails in your accounts that you are unaware of as new passwords will be sent to alternate email addresses.
