Can I change or hide my IP address?

Is private IP address of my computer is hard wired or can I change it? If not, can I hide it?

  • I want to prevent any website from reading the private IP address of my computer. In this regard, I would like to know how to block any site trying to read the IP address and if it is possible to change the IP address from time to time.

  • Answer:

The only way to really prevent this is using an anonymous proxy service, which you can find many of on the internet, a common one is anonimyzer. If you are IMing someone though, or filesharing, there is no real way to mask your IP address. The private IP of your machine on the internet is given to you by your internet provider, and it is usually set to a certain address. Trying to set it manually will lead to problems.

What you want is an anonymous proxy. It's basically another computer that your computer connects to that in turn connects to the internet in order to mask your IP. If you use firefox, you can find an easy way to use an anonymous proxy here: http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/54/91/

Hi, You can use this method to see what is your private IP Address: 1. start -> run -> cmd 2. ipconfig If its, start with 192.168.XX.XX or 10.XX.XX.XX then you are already in the private IP Address. your Public IP Address can be found on: http://www.myipaddress.com When you are surfing the web, your Public IP Address is the one that is being released to the people. and there is NO WAY to prevent it unless you are using a "proxy" something like this website: http://www.anonymizer.com/default.html Then you will hide behind them since you are surfing using their IP Address instead of yours. dboy My Blog: http://dragonboy2006.blogspot.com

Well actually you're ISP (Internet Service Provider) assigns you an IP address. And unless you paid to get a static IP address, it is changed occasionally anyway via DHCP. (DHCP is the service that assigns the IP address and, depending on it's settings, rotates or changes your address) There are programs you can use to mask your IP address. http://www.anonymizer.com/consumer/products/anonymous_surfing/?id=KNC-WT3998091212 This one actually costs money to use... it's a service they provide. Note however, they aren't that hard to break either, so if you're doing something illegal, I'd recommend against it.

Well, your IP address is not hard wired in any way and may even change by itself, since it is actually assigned by your Internet Service Provider. Disconnecting and/or powering your DSL/Cable modem off/on may change your IP automatically, however, your ISP will always have records who had which IP at what time (i.e. if the cops are after you, they will find you). You cannot block or hide your IP, unless you use an anomyzation service which is usually slow and inconvenient. Also, it makes finding you harder, but not impossible. Basically - the only good way to surf the Internet 100% anonymous is either an Internet cafe or using some public WiFi Internet.

Its true what this guy said but there is a way put a router between you and the modem they will see your network masked address but only the router will know your IP address. sort of they can find the mask too but they would be probably looking just for the IP
