How do you know if you have a keylogger?

How Do I Know If They Implanted a Keylogger on My Computer?

  • Right Now I am looking up about keylogger and was wondering what should i do to know/or get rid of it because i don't and we all don't want personal information to be used.

  • Answer:

Many antispyware/antivirus programs are pretty poor when it comes to keyloggers because they can now create hooks and become very hard to find. Firstly, if you really think you have a keylogger install, just format your HDD and start from fresh. After the format, secure Windows and use the following programs to prevent a keylogger from installing and tracking. If you run your Windows account as a limited user account, this should stop many keyloggers from ever installing without your permission. Then if you install a good firewall with HIPS feactures (Host intrusion prevention system) that will be able to stop MANY keyloggers from installing. I recommend Comodo because it passed all keylogging tests and it is completely free. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ You can also install an excellent free antikeylogging program called "SnoopFree Privacy Shield" which is highly effective. It does not use definitions to find keyloggers like antivirus programs do... It basically stops any program that tries to hook to your keyboard or screen, so they cannot see what you are doing or typing. I have personally tested this against 4 keyloggers and it stopped all of them in their tracks. It got a 5 star rating from Download.com editiors. http://www.download.com/SnoopFree-Privacy-Shield/3000-2092_4-10336141.html If you really want to know if you are safe from software keyloggers, then run the AKLT tool -- this is an excellent way to test if a keylogger can see your keystrokes. http://www.firewallleaktester.com/aklt.htm Do the above + use an antivirus and antispyware program and you will be pretty damn safe...

I heard Windows actually makes a good program now call Defender http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx My personal favorite though is StopZilla http://www.stopzilla.com/ You should also get a good firewall such as Zone Alarm http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/home.jsp With a good firewall the information gathered from the keylogger would never make it out of your computer regardless if the Anti Spyware software detected it or not. Also note, a keylogger is a program that runs indescretely in the background of windows (or whatever OS u use). They usually disguise them with clever names that sound like important processes. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and you'll see that list of "Processes".

Keyloggers (software) are usually installed in stealth mode. Meaning they will not show up in your program list. You can check your registry, thats about the only place you might be able to see one. If you use Windows - Download a free program by Microsft called "Windows Defender". It scan's your system everyday and alerts you to any changes, and also if there is any malaware/spyware/keyloggers/etc installed.

good question. What you do to see if you have one on your computer is to follow the cord from your keyboard to the back of your computer where it plugs in. Normally there is just one cord with either a usb or a special colored plug that goes into the back of the cpu...or the big box thats your computer. There is a key logger on your computer if the cord from your keyboard goes into a flash drive like memory stick thing and then into the computer. they look like little rectangles....like a thumb drive/flash drive/memory stick or what ever you want to call them. So as a review: your keyboard cord would have to go into another rectangular device that then plugs into your computer in order for you to have a keylogger on your computer.
