How to hide IP address from ISP?
-
I wanted to know if you can hide your IP address from your ISP? I've read that you can't but would just like to make sure. I have a new ISP and my earlier one warned me twice coz they knew what exact movies/TV series (Rush hour 3 & the Riches) I downloaded from torrents and they were copyrighted. Anyways, I would really appreciate some enlightening answers.

As was already said before, your ISP gave you the IP address you have so they will already know what it is. PeerGuardian will help avoid connecting to other IP addresses that are owned by companies that want to track what you are downloading. The RIAA, MPAA, Media Defender and all of the movie studios and recording companies are in the Peer guardian list. Peer Guardian is definitely useful but it still won't help hide what you are downloading from your ISP. For that you need encryption. In Azureus there is an option called "Transport Encryption" (Also called Message Stream Encryption). All good BitTorrent clients have a form of transport encryption these days. You should turn this option on in your BitTorrent client and also tick the box that says "Require Transport Encryption". Use the RC4 option if you can choose the encryption cipher. To hide your web browsing habits (say, visiting lots of torrent sites...) from your ISP you should use Tor. Tor encrypts all your web traffic on your computer before sending it out in a random direction. Your connection to any website will go from your computer to the computer of someone else using Tor, to another one and another one. Eventually it will be decrypted and sent to the website. The response from the website will follow the same path in reverse and will only be decrypted once it reaches your computer. Nobody in the Tor network will know who you are or what you are looking at. The last guy in the network (the exit node) will know what you are looking at but he will not know who you are or what your IP address is. The website in question will not know who you are or your IP address and your ISP will not know what you are viewing.

You can't really hide your IP from your ISP because they are the one who gave it to you. You can hide your IP using proxy or hide IP software if you want to access websites that you don't want to display your real IP. But, you can't hide your original IP when downloading torrents. It is the IP of your ISP which is being used to connect to the internet. Without their IP, you can't connect to the internet and you can't change it.

You can't hide your IP from your ISP as they are the ones who assign the IPs. You can however take measures to ensure you are not tracked or monitored when using the internet. Google a piece of software called "PeerGuardian 2", it should stop you from being tracked when downloading movies etc through torrent technology. It will block all known government/private sector IPs from monitoring your activity.

You can hide your IP from the ISP in a sense. The way it works is your ISP assigns the IP to you...which they then track and record. If you use a proxy server to mask your IP then the ISP can no longer track you because you are not using that IP address, you are using one generated by the server. Once you get to the gateway point of the server, your ISP can not see what you are doing since you are now detached from that IP address.
