How do I use Outlook 2003 with All-new Yahoo mail?

My Outlook 2003 and Yahoo Mail Spam problem: WTF?

  • Ok Answerers, I've got a tricky one for you. The tech support folks at Yahoo keep sending me cookie-cutter responses to my question, so you're my only hope. I'm using Yahoo's Business Mail (associated with my domain), and accessing it via POP3 with Outlook 2003. When I check the mail using the web client, I get very little spam. However, when I check with Outlook, something really strange happens: On send/receive, I get precisely 72 pieces of Spam. They seem to be of the SMTP error type associated with the Sober virus. If I close Outlook and come back a day later, refresh my email, boom...another 72 pieces of Spam. It only happens when I do send/receive. The spam gets properly sorted to the junk mail folder, but I am constantly deleting tens of thousands of items from it after a day of using Outlook. I've run several virus and adware programs and found nothing. Any advice?

  • Answer:

Yahoo puts all of it's SPAM into a SPAM folder. However, when you use you POP account settings, it downloads whatever is in your ONLINE SPAM folder into your Outlooks INBOX. From there, Outlook will refilter it into it's JUNK folder. I would suggest 2 things to try here. Set Outlook to delete the messages from the server after syncing. Also, go into your web interface and delete everything in the SPAM folder and empty your online trash along with your Outlook trash. The mail is probably getting filtered because of the virus. If yahoo caught the email then they probably stripped the harmful content from the emails. (That's not always a true statement) If you are still getting all this SPAM mail, I would suggest changing your email address. Perhapse use a new one with a dot in it because they are really fun....

Not sure of the magig 72 number but I believe when you use a web based client, the Junk mail turn into Bulk mail folder. Check what happens with outlook It probably is relaying you the bulk mail contents , If it is, you can turn it off in the Y!mailbox options.

Messenger in Yahoo Mail isn't loading properly. I try signing in but it doesn't do it the first time or second or third. When it finally shows me online it says I have no contacts online when I know that there are people on line. I try sending messages and the person never receives it. They try sending me and I never receive. That's when it keeps me signed in long enough to try sending messages. Usually signs me out within a few minutes, though people say I appear online on their contact lists. I have two yahoo accounts and am having this issue on both accounts on my computer (works ok at work). I tried all the steps mentioned above on both browsers. I started having this issue 4 days ago. I am using a Mac OS X 10.6.8 on both Safari 5.1.9 and latest version of Chrome.
