Is AVG a virus or antivirus?
-
followed a link given to me in Answers to "imageshack" and it IMMEDIATELY downloaded AVG "antivirus" software which locked up my system. It also loaded a steady stream of popup messages that my system was infected, click to remove; THEN it tried to get me to BUY a license FIRST. Everytime i start my browser it terminates and opens a file named IEXPLOREEMERGENCY.exe which is a little internet explorer window that opens and warns you that your pc is infected with malware, and restricts you from acessing any antivirus websites. Pops up randomly with messages like "Hacker attempt blocked!" HELP! it wont leave me alone until i buy a licence and my computer is slow as ****, it is located at C:/Program Files/AVG Anti-virus 2011/avg.exe along with a notepad file saying TERMINATE PROGRAM chrome.exe; iexplore.exe; firefox.exe; safari.exe; Open file C:/Program files/AVG Anti-virus 2011/IEXPLOREEMERGENCY.EXE is this legit? is it trusted? help! (oh and im on my ipod typing this.)

Answer:
As said above, if gotten from its home site or from a legitimate software site, AVG is a legitimate antivirus. BUT there is a rogue version and you seem to have got it. Use this removal procedure here. It has you working in safe mode, using RKill to kill the process, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to remove the rogue. > Remove AVG Antivirus 2011: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-avg-antivirus-2011

There is a legitimate anti-virus program called AVG but you may have downloaded a malicious copy. It's always best to get programs from source rather than some third-party website, unless it's a known reputable download site such as Softpedia, Major Geeks or FileHippo. Have you tried to uninstall it?

AVG is legitimate antivirus software, but there are plenty of fake antivirus scanners claiming to be the real thing.
