What is glitter made of?

i heard it was made of fish scales and egg whites?? =o but i wanted to know if there was another way to make glitter with out using something that came from a animal. can someone please help? you see i'm vegan and my friend says i cant use glitter in my makeup because its made from fish scales and egg whites. so is there any chance that it could be made from something else?

Actual GLITTER is made of plastic. However, the SHIMMER in a lot of makeup is from fish scales. However, many makeup brands just use mica and other natural minerals to get the shimmer.
