hey! i have naturally curly hair too, and used to always straighten it because i didn't know how to make it look good. i don't like that my curly hair to look wet, stringy, or like i have too much product in it. after trying a lot of different methods, i think i have finally perfected my curls though, and i even got two compliments on my curls just this week from some people i work with!! here's what i do: as soon as i get out of the shower, i brush my hair upside down (this creates volume later) i squeeze out some of the water, but it's best to leave it as wet as possible (this keeps the curls together and less frizzy). then i use garnier fructise mousse (but for me, the mousse i use doesn't really matter. herbal essences and pantene work just as well) i use about a tennis ball size amount of mousse and just kind of apply it from the back of my hair to the front, making sure to get the hair in the middle also. i do this with my head still upside down, and i DONT separate the strands of curls. it's kind of more of a "squeezing" the mousse into the hair and definitely NOT combing it through. it is best if the strands are at least 3/8" to 1/4" thick. when they get much smaller than this, your curls will look stringy or will be frizzy. after this i put about a dime size of john freida's frizz-ease into the palm of my hands, rub it in my hands, then just pat it onto my curls, lifting/pressing them towards my scalp and "encouraging" their curl. i try not to use my fingers too much because this separates them and makes the curls frizzier. your hair should still be really wet, so it's good to wrap a towel around your head for awhile ( i usually leave it on for about 15 minutes) after most of the excess water has been soaked up by my towel, i take off the towel and let my hair fall around my face. since i brush my hair upside down and let it towel dry "up", it still has good volume. the curls should still be in thick strands and look wet. the biggest no no is to touch the curls!! again- it will separate and make them frizzy. do whatever you can to just let your hair air dry without touching your hair AT ALL. if you absolutely have to, you can blow dry it (it usually takes your hair about an hour to completely air dry). put your blow dryer on the lowest setting, and if you can, blow dry the underneath hair first with your head upside down. if you blow dry your hair too soon, your natural curls won't have found their place yet, and this will either make them less curly, tangled, or stringy. once your hair is at least 90% dry, it's okay to touch it (haha- must resist the urge to touch it!) if parts of your curls have become a little bit crunchy from the mousse, squeeze them in your hands from top to bottom, but don't try to comb them out or separate them. so yea- that should just about do it. trust me- i have tried allllllll different ways of wearing my hair curly, and over many trials and errors, this is the best i have come up with! let me know if you have any more questions!
