For Men: How to make a scruffy beard soft?
-
My boyfriend hates shaving, and his hair on his face grows very quickly. I really love the way he looks when his beard grows in (though i do make him shave the "my-first-mustache" stuble - ew!) so we've found a common ground here. He keeps it relatively short, so it's not *really* a beard. One question: It bothers the heck out of him that its very rough. Anyway to make the hair coming in "soft", and avoid that itchy-scratchy feeling? I've read that he needs to let it grow, and trim it instead, because the sharpness is caused by the rough edges of a sharp razor. Any ideas on what to do and what products can be used to help? Thanks!

Answer:
Since every body's hair is different there will be different methods that might work. It will be a process of elimination. First I would suggest growing it out a little, then use a harsh alkaline shampoo like baby shampoo to help break down the coarseness, next I would suggest a heavy conditioner and leave it in and apply the hottest towel you can stand around it, let it cool down and then LIGHTLY rinse it out almost leaving some conditioner, after that take a natural bristle brush and brush into place. You will be amazed at the difference plus the more you do it the better it feels until you stop because the hair is not that long and there is always new growth. If at that point you don't feel it is working then you can always try perm solution because it always makes the hair softer right when it's applied. Heat from a blow dryer will also make it feel softer...picture that blow drying your mans beard, brushing it with a brush...Smile and Good Luck!

Use a hair conditioner on the beard area. Also works on scratchy hair in other areas. Well, it does!

There is a sand-paper like tool that is marketed to women- some of the brand names are: Hair Off Sugi-Soft Leg Smoothers by Garden Club WAX-A-WAY SMOOTHAWAY MITT Silky Mitt. All of these work as microdermabrasion. If you use it on a short beard it will soften the ends of the individual hairs giving them a more rounded tip and a softer fell to the skin. The discomfort level is about the same as the Epilady....so it should be ok for a man.

let it grow out more

yeah, just wait until it grows out some and trim it. that's what works for me... you can get some el-cheepo trimmer at Wal-mart or something for ten bucks... splurge.
