How can I keep my hair color lasting longer?

When dyeing hair an unnatural color [like pink, blue, etc.] what are tips to keep the color bright / lasting?

  • Basically, every time I dye my hair a color like pink or blue [or w.e.], it fades within days. The last time I did it it took about four hours to dye [since it was in layers and about three different colors], and the color had almost completely faded within three days. I don't wash my hair for a day [sometimes two] depending on the color, and take a cool shower the first two days it's dyed, but it still fades. I keep the dye for a little longer than suggested, usually about 45 minutes to an hour, and it looks really bright the first day, but by the second day it's faded and looks horrible. The colors and the bleach are expensive, and I'd like them to last more than a few days.

  • Answer:

Well first of all you have to bleach your hair before putting on the semi permanent color, it will stay in better and be brighter. Don't shampoo very often, just condition and rinse in cool water. Do you blow dry your hair or curl/straighten it? If you do, that has a lot to do with it because the cuticle is damaged from the heat so it doesn't hold the color in as well. What are you using? Manic Panic fades really quickly, use Punky Colour, it stays in for a very long time, I have had it in my hair for four months and it was still very bright!

You definitely want to bleach your hair first- damaging I know- but it's the best way to get vibrant color that will last. When you bleach your hair it opens up the cuticle - allowing the dye to soak in. It's also a good idea to "wash" your hair with vinegar to remove residue and haircare products before dyeing.

All store bought color hair dye claim to last that long, but they usually fade within days. I dyed my hair "blue" a few months ago, and it turned out to be lime green, hence the bleach and all. - I think that if you want the color to stay around longer, get it professionally done. Costly, but better results.

There are special shampoos and conditioners for colored hair and using a shower cap when you're not washing your hair helps. I also find (and this really works) that if you don't shower for 2 or 3 days after getting it dyed, it keeps the color longer.

Make sure you're using hair products for color-treated hair & use cold water when you're washing your hair. Also, here's a link to tips on dyes & unnatural colors: http://forum.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=messageboard.viewThread&EntryID=71870149&groupID=106259687 Hope this helped =]

Bleach is the only way to keep the unnatural colors staying bright the longest they possibly can. The only problem with bleach is that it is permanent...so if you want to put in streaks/highlights or color the tips... make sure to start applying the bleach at the bottom ends of your hair and work your way to the root otherwise your roots will be platinum blond and the tips will be more brassy and won't take the color as good at the tips. OR...maybe it could just be the brand that you're using?? Try to use one of the thicker creme unnatural color dyes...they have more moisture that will cling and soak into your hair to last longer. Do you have Hot Topic stores in your area?? I loved the "Raw" brand hair dyes....and the color always turned out sooo rich.

use a color protecting shampoo line. Dying will always damage your hair though...
