Why is Taiwan so prone to typhoons?

Are Typhoons most likely to hit Tokyo, Beijing, or Hong Kong?

  • Are Typhoons most likely to hit Tokyo, Beijing, or Hong Kong on a given summer week (late July/Aug)? Didn't Tokyo have a Typhoon a few weeks ago, which caused an earthquake or something? How often does this happen and how common are after-shocks? Also, how about Hong Kong? How often does this happen here, if at all? I am well aware that Taiwan currently is bracing for a Typhoon, but I need to find out the relative probabilities that a Typhoon would hit these 3 locations in the next few weeks, as I have to figure out whereI should book my return (connecting) flight through.

  • Answer:

Typhoons hit each on a regular basis. It is no big deal usually. I live in a city that supplied me with 4 typhoons last year and 1 already this year. To be planning a flight connection based on avoiding typhoons is not a wise course of action. (But probably Hong Kong. Beijing is too far inland, and the Typhoons are most common and strongest in the south.) (Oh, and Typhoons do not cause earthquakes.)
