Whats going on with the weather in the Virginia area?
-
I know how to read surface maps but sometimes there is high pressure and no fronts and still storms and rain patches. Is there anywhere that I can read a detailed paragraph description to what is causing the storms i.e. convergence, pressure, jet stream, ect. I'm trying to learn weather observation and forcasting on my own by observing my own weather. However sometimes I can't explain what is happening and don't know what is happening. Example last night at mid-night tunderstorms popped up 30 miles west of my house. I didn't know thunderstorms could develop at mid-night without frontal activity. Now my main question, what is the weather scenario right now in the mid-atlantic preferably virginia since there are storms out right now? Is it a weak warm frontal boundary? If so how do warm fronts cause thunderstorms?

Answer:
www.weather.gov Put in your city and state. Bottom right says "forecast discussion." It's technical. Lots of meteorological stuff. But should be what you're looking for.

Yeah I know I'm trying to figure that out myself... June 18th I believe was the date... It was like a nightmare... here in Williamsburg we had two severe thunderstorms in one day... the first one brought small hail and strong wind gusts... a few York county residents reported Funnel clouds but thank god the Weather Channel meteorologists said they didn't track any Tornado formations but they said that it maybe something forming. The 2nd storm was like a Lightning storm except it had very heavy rain and loud rumbles of thunder. I know that doesn't answer your question, but the storms were probably caused by a low-pressure coming from the midwest. The terrible storms probably formed of a low-pressure coming from the midwest and the high-pressure coming from the south. When the two pressures came together it started to mix and cause different kinds of weather, like the low-pressure caused the atmosphere of the cities pressure mix to make small hail, which proves it was a cold front. The high-pressure was supposed to be a hot front which called the heavy rainfall. I hope this information helped, and keep it safe in whatever city you live in!
