How could a severe drought affect the california coastline?

  • Answer:

Well... a severe drought would mean less rainfall and snow, which would mean that rivers would either run low, or run completely dry. At the coastline, rivers are a main source of fresh water, so freshwater plants would die off, and animals that need fresh water to drink would also die off. Where rivers meet the coast line, they form estuaries of silt, and other sediment. These are used as sanctuaries for a number of species. With less water coming down, there would be less silt and sediment to replenish these estuaries, and wave action would erode them away more, making them smaller, and causing fewer estuary species to breed. Also, sand comes from estuaries, so the beaches would shrink. a lot of clams and mussels would lose habitat, there would be fewer places for sun bathing, surfing, etc. tourist towns along the coast that lost their beach would lose a lot of business, and the ones that kept their beach would be overcrowded.
