  • Answer:

Severe weather is caused by sharply contrasting air masses (such as continental polar and maritime tropical), an abundance of moisture at low-levels (such as 850 mb), a lifting mechanism (frontal, convective, etc.), high instability, upper air support (jet stream support, wind shear, etc.), and warm dry air (at surface, low-levels, and mid-levels). Severe weather is most likely to occur ahead of a strong cold front when it reaches the Eastern half of the United States. Southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico at the 850 mb provides necessary moisture. Severe weather is associated with high winds, heavy rain fall (possible flooding), and maybe tornado development. Highest potential is in spring and summer months.
