Why are geese migrating North for the winter?

Geese in winter weather?

  • I have a pond/creek pretty far back in my back yard. There are geese that are usually there in the spring/summer. But Michigan weather, as you may know, is very dysfunctional. Yesterday it was pretty nice, and today it is snowing. Well today I walked outside and saw that there was just once goose. There were a lot yesterday, but now they are all gone. This one is all by itself, standing in the same spot calling over and over. Its sad. But It would make me feel a lot better if I knew this one thing. Do geese survive in winter weather. Its twenty something degrees right now and snowing. He's still there, but I'm afraid to see him freeze to death. Will he survive?

  • Answer:

Yes I have seen flocks of geese migrating as late as mid November. Up here, it can drop to below 10 degrees F by that time, so obviously they can deal with it. They are Canada geese though (a tough bunch). Is your goose a Canada goose?
