  Stability, or instability, is an expression that relates to how prone an air parcel is to rising. Unstable air will tend to rise on it's own while stable air does not want to rise, in other words, is not buoyant. A typical case of an unstable air mass is warm and moist air at the surface with cooler and drier air aloft. The warm air is less dense and thus would tend to rise, thus being unstable. Cold air is normally stable, which is why things tend to clear out behind cold fronts.
