How important is the weather to us?

How do temperature, air pressure, and humidity combine to create all the weather around us?

  • The question says it all: How do temperature, air pressure, and humidity combine to create all the weather around us?

  • Answer:

Your right the question does say it all - what a massive question it is. The kind of question I see and usually stray away from, as it one for which, it would be very easy to write a ten thousand word literature review on. Anyway I'll have a crack and try and keep the answer brief(ish). Firstly, all of the meteorological variables mentioned are interlinked. As temperature increases so does pressure and viceversa. Differences in temperature on a global scale drives global circulation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_circulation On a national and regional scale temperature and hence pressure differences create winds. Air temperature affects the moisture holding capacity of air - warm air can hold more water vapour than cold. As this air rises it carries moisture into the upper atmosphere, when it cools and condenses it releases the energy that it absorbed to allow it to evaporate. This energy creates the violent storms we associate with warm, humid summer days. During colder seasons it is cool enough in the upper atmosphere for ice crystals to form and these coalesce to fall as snow. Finally, I should probably say something about fog. When air becomes saturated vapour begins to condense this is what forms clouds in the upper atmosphere. Fog is created when moisture rich air is cooled by the ground beneath it, reducing its moisture holding capacity, causing vapour to condense and form a sort of ground-based cloud or fog. Well I've tried to be brief and I could have gone into endless detail, the natural world is inherently complex. Hope this helped! .

These are super complicated which is why super computers are needed to predict weather. You can find general ideas at this site. http://www.theweatherprediction.com/ and http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/home.rxml
