Why does hair curl and frizz in rainy weather?
-
My hair is thick and wavy, but in rainy weather it curls....curious why this happens? Don't tell me "because of the humidity", I want to know what about the humidity makes hair curl.

Answer:
Hair is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture from the air. In dry weather it releases moisture, in wet weather it takes it on. Normally this should cause your hair to shorten or lengthen evenly, but if you use certain hair products that don't fully coat each hair, then the uncoated portion can absorb more water than the coated portion and curling will occur. Imagine each hair to be the front cover of a paperback book. The laminated side is protected from the moisture but the interior non-laminated side absorbs more moisture and lengthens. The cover will curl outward toward the laminated side just like your hair does.
