Why we feel cold during fever, even body temperature is high?

If standard body temperature is around 99 degrees, why doesn't any outdoor temperature under 99 feel cold?

  • Normal body temperature is 98.6, but people tend to start to get hot when it hits the 70s. Seems to me that it shouldn't get hot until the air around you is hotter than your body.

  • Answer:

Your body is an engine which continuously produces heat, so it needs to stay in an environment cooler than itself to stay comfortable. Energy flows from high to low (or in this case warm to cold), and there are ideal temperatures for your body to operate at. If it's too warm outside then your body can not cool itself as efficiently, so it is uncomfortable. On the other hand, if it's too cold then your body is giving off more heat to the environment than it can generate to keep comfortable. For many people this "ideal" temperature (room temperature) is about 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit, but based on a persons ability to generate heat and their circulation, this value will change.

you need to factor in humidity

Probably because of adaptation over time to a "norm". Many people who live in/were born in colder climates are more tolerant of the cold. Many who live in warm climates are more tolerant of the heat. More directly to answer your question though - that is the inner body temperature, which does not necessarily reflect the outer body temperature. Lizards and other cold blooded animals are the only creatures whose inner body temperature mirrors the outer.

Internal temperature is 98.7 degrees, now If I cut you open, and left you there for a while anything under 98.7 will feel cold and you'd prolly die. your skin can withstand much more varying temperatures that your internals

There's at least a few reasons. One, most people wear clothes when they're outside, and clothes insulate you, making you feel warmer. As a matter of fact, darker clothes actually absorb sunlight, making you feel even warmer. Second, if the air is humid, your sweat can't evaporate, which makes your body feel cooler. Third, the UV rays in sunlight hitting your skin make it feel warm, because they have plenty of energy. Only if you were naked and the air was dry and it was cloudy or night, would 99 feel comfortable.

You're talking about INTERNAL body temperature. Your skin is feeling the external temperature.
